Ondeko

伝統芸能 鬼太鼓Ondeko, the traditional performing art

Ondeko is a traditional performing art which has been passed down in Sado since ancient time. Now there are more than 120 Ondeko groups on the island.
In our Niibo area, Ondeko is popular. Our CEO Tadaaki belongs to Niibo Central Young People’s Association which is comprise of people from four villages of Niiho, Baba, Sankyo, and Kitakata. The association holds total of 20 performers between 20s and 40s. Every year they perform Ondeko on Sannou Festival, 14 April, and on Tenjin Festival, 24 and 25 June.
The association’s Ondeko is told to be derived from Noh, and is characterised by stillness and motion of demons entangled by two lions.
From a month prior to the festival, performers practice every evening from 7:30pm to 10pm, and on the day of the festival, they perform in about 200 houses form early morning until midnight.
In the village’s shrine, they dedicate the Ondeko to wish for sound health, wellbeing of families, and bumper harvest. Ondeko is a tough work for performers. And yet when they perform poorly, they would be complained by elderlies.
Children admire Ondeko performers at the same time judge severely. They may also complain such as “this year’s demon is nothing special” or “the sound of the drum is horrible”. There is a group called Kitakata Children’s Ondeko where young ones can engage in the performance.
Transmisssion of traditional performing art plays very important roles in growth and stimulation of local communities. All the performers say, “trainig is very tough, and during the festival I feel more tiredness and nervousness than fun. Afterwards, I just can’t move my body”.
The spirit of festival may seem unreasonable, however, this tradition has been repeated by our ancestors on the same place, same day of year, so preserving it signifys connecting past and future. We believe preserving tradition can save local agricultures, and vice versa. Ondeko is Sado’s treasure to preserve for generations.
